There are thoughtful and reflective members of the left, as there are on the right (though they have seemed curiously silent in the last decade).

The one area that they both converge on is in their trenchant criticism of the country's embrace of imperialism. I do not buy into the popular media, pundit, and talk radio noise that there can be no common ground between progressives and conservatives. That makes for great ratings, but is morally corrosive to the health of our common life together.

Those on the left and right have a common interest in resisting the imperial temptation to which our nation has succumbed. But, as Bacevich demonstrates, we continue in that temptation because we as citizens continue to permit it.Jay Hershbergerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18029019602244839116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5883387699993513269.post-50738016659743430992010-05-29T08:54:17.566-07:002010-05-29T08:54:17.566-07:00I am by political persuasion normally a liberal, a...I am by political persuasion normally a liberal, at least in terms of social policy. While I still admire those goals, I'll admit I'm feeling somewhat cheated by the lack of depth and substance to much of what the left DOES. I am moved by this post, Jay, and will read these authors. Thank you for your thoughtful reflections and for reawakening my spirit.Brucehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08846635479688492324noreply@blogger.com
